Is This a Good Time to Join the Financial Planning Industry in 2020?

In my younger days as a Financial Services Consultant, one industry expert shared during a career seminar that anytime is a good time to join this career. At that moment, I suddenly realized that I joined at a time of great financial crisis too. To put it simply, it's the will and determination of the individual that determine his final destiny and not the surrounding events or circumstances at that point in time.

I would like to share my personal journey for newbies that are considering this career. This career is a great one for the one that is willing to put in the time, energy & hard work. As a fresh NUS graduate with short working experience, I can only say I have a very limited social network for potential clients.

So how did I achieve the professional & financial growth in a span of few years?

Short answer: Many know, Few Do.

Long answer: I had a very simple game plan. To focus on one area among the wide range of financial solutions and become an expert in that particular area. My expertise during my initial years is Savings & Investments. I did 3 presentations per day to complete strangers and people that I had just known. Everyday, including Saturdays & Sundays. The prospecting hours are crazy but I enjoyed the sales advisory process very much although it is challenging at most times. I did this for close to 4 years as a new consultant. I must say it is extremely demoralising or even painful emotionally when the rejections got so high. But I know my end goal at the end of the day and persisted on.

The reason I want to share my personal journey is to encourage those individuals that wants to radically change their current situations to a better one through this career. This is a really great career for people that are willing to work for it. We reap what we sow, always.

Note: During the initial years, I did tons of reading about savings & investments matters. At the same time, I do read up on many sales related books too. In short, I absorb everything like a sponge and put into application what I had learnt from the books. Through countless trials & errors, I managed to come up with a curated sales system & process for myself. It is Simple but not Easy.
